See and Listen about mHealth: Kilifi Video!

Below is a BBC-produced video about stories from Kilifi and our work there: it features project partners Jonathan Mativo and Dr. Benjamin Tsofa.  The producer, Elizabeth, traveled to Kilifi with her family in May, 2010.  While it was a relaxing trip (Kilifi’s beaches are amazing), she also wanted to do what she could to help out… and help out she has!  (She was caught by the air traffic shut down from that Iceland volcano erupting: even after missing extra days from her job, she found time to put this together.)  This is about mHealth, but she also conducted interviews about deworming and scholarships, which we look forward to.  Thanks, Elizabeth!!

Amazing News: Gettin’ the Word Out

A couple of minutes ago, we were notified that Kilifi Kids will be featured on the homepage of IndieGoGo. Awesome news. We’re getting the word out about KK. See the picture below.

On that note… you know… if you haven’t already… why don’t you mosey on over there? Great cause. http://www.indiegogo.com/Kilifi_Kids_Cell_Phones_for_Health_in_Kenya

Deworming Day is Here Again

We recently heard from Charles Mbogo, a leader of our deworming work, that they’re launching this year’s treatment for tens of thousands of students aged 6 to 14 for intestinal parasites.  One setback in our 4-year campaign has been high turnover in teachers.  When we launched this program in 2008, we made sure that teachers were fully trained in distributing medication as well as taught their students how to improve hand-washing and decrease reinfection.  However, Kenya’s Department of Education occasionally transfers teachers.  That happened this year and so we’re holding an additional mass training session.

Within a month, de-worming will be complete and a whole new cadre of students will be healthier and better learners!
